Breast augmentation

Natural result with FDA-cleared silicone implants

The female breast is a symbol of feminity and therefore much attention has been given to its aesthetic image. The ideal size and shape of the breast differ among different women, depending on both the body anatomy and the cultural characteristics of each person. In many cases, breast development is not normal, and as a result a woman may have breasts that are smaller than the normal size; these women choose the breast augmentation procedure.

Breast augmentation is a safe and simple procedure, aiming at increasing your breast’s size with implants. General anaesthesia is required and the procedure may last for up to 2 hours. Silicone implants are the most popular implants used in breast augmentation, because they look natural in terms of the final result, and they are long-lasting, but also because they do not interfere with breast-feeding. In our clinics, we use advanced, high-quality silicone implants that are approved by the strict US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and have long life guarantee.

Breast augmentation:

  • Improves the shape of the breast
  • Restores symmetry of breast size with the whole body
  • Shapes youthful and tight breasts
  • Enhances self-confidence
  • Improves sexual life
The anatomical site where the implant will be inserted determines the size and the incision required. In particular, if the incision is made along the nipple it is less visible and a smaller implant is usually placed. If the size of the nipple allows it a larger implant may be placed through a slightly larger incision. Silicone implants can be placed: a) under the mammary gland (subglandular), b) under the thin fascia that covers the muscle (subfascial), c) under the pectoral muscle (submuscular), or d) with a combination of anatomical sites, depending on the case. Nevertheless, the depth at which the implant is placed is determined by the characteristics and wishes of the patient.

Important reasons and requirements for breast augmentation

It is a very intimate procedure and it's important that you have realistic expectations. Before deciding to do it, it is essential to know whether you are the right candidate. Find it out by checking the following requirements:
  • You maintain good physical health, you are not pregnant or breast-feeding
  • You are above 18 years old to ensure your breasts are completely grown
  • You are dissatisfied with your small breasts
  • Your breasts have lost their volume and shape following weight loss pregnancy or ageing
  • The upper part of the breast appears "empty"
  • Your breasts do not have the same size and shape
  • Either one or both breasts has not developed normally or has a "streched" shape

Breast augmentation with fat transfer

Apart from using silicone implants, fat transfer breast augmentation may be also performed. This procedure essentially uses liposuction to take fat from the donor area of the body, which is then placed in the patient’s breast to restore lost volume, as well as to improve its shape. It is a particularly popular cosmetic surgery that benefits more than one areas of the body at the same time.

Diet Tips

What is the appropriate age to have a breast augmentation surgery?
In order to undergo a breast augmentation procedure, the breasts have to be fully developed, that is after turning 18 years of age.
How should I prepare myself before the breast augmentation surgery?
An ultrasound or a mammogram depending on the woman’s age are required before the procedure.
How long does the surgery last?
Breast augmentation surgery lasts about 2 hours and general anaesthesia is required.
How long will the results last?
The results of a successful breast augmentation are usually long-lasting. However, the result may be partly affected by factors such as pregnancy, sudden weight fluctuation or ageing.
Is there an association between the implants used in breast augmentation and breast cancer?
No, there is no association. Breasts with implants can be normally examined, as the implant is placed under the breast, not inside it.
Can breasts with implants be examined normally?
Yes of course, provided that silicone implants have been used. Latest-generation mammography devices can scan the breast fully, even with the implant. In any case, you should inform the doctor.
What should I know before deciding to undergo breast augmentation?
There are 5 basic things you should know and discuss with your doctor before you decide to undergo breast augmentation: the incision, the site of the body from which the implant will be inserted, the size of the incision, the material of the implant that will be placed, the size of your new breast, and of course the size of the implant.
Are all implants similar?
No. Implants are categorised as anatomical (teardrop-like) and round depending on the following: a) the material of which they are made and their texture, b) level of projection, and c) the shape. Other distinctive characteristics are the diameter and the volume, especially for silicone implants, which are the most popular both for the natural result they offer and because they are long-lasting.
Are implants safe?
Modern high-quality silicone implants used by our specialised medical clinics are perfectly safe; they are approved by the strict US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and have long life guarantee.
What are the criteria to select the right size?
When it comes to this question, “size matters” is not always the right answer. For each body type the appropriate size may differ. A small implant with normal size provides a more natural, realistic result, and it is easier to resize in case of another breast augmentation, or if a breast lift is desired as time goes by.
To the contrary, a "big" or too big size of implant may look disproportional to your body type, while the breasts will be heavier and larger, which may accelerate the loss of their tightness.
In any case, the choice of the size is determined according to the patient’s desires, her anatomical characteristics, as well as the results of the pre-operative check-up.
How long of a recovery period can I expect?
The site where the implant was placed defines the exact length of the recovery period required. Usually, you will have to stay in the medical practice for a few hours, or you may stay overnight at the clinic. For example, if silicone implants are placed under the breast gland, recovery will be much simpler and quicker.
When can I resume normal activity?
A period of 7-9 days is adequate for your recovery, after which you can return to your work and daily activities. However, if you exercise regularly, you should wait for 1 month and then resume your favourite activity.
When will I see the first results?
The results become visible 2-3 months after the procedure, and even more evident when the swelling disappears.
What should I do after the operation?
A special dressing will be placed on your breast for a few hours or even 1 day. On the next day, the dressing is removed and it is recommended to use a sports bra for 30 days.
Can I breast-feed?
Yes, of course; silicone implants do not affect lactiferous glands neither do they alter milk composition.
How will I know that I need to undergo breast augmentation?
You will know it in the case where despite the fact that your breasts are fully developed and you maintain a healthy status: :
  • Your breasts are:
    • not symmetrical
    • are too small
    • have lost their volume
  • Your skin is sagging
  • You are dissatisfied with their size
